Kiholo Bay Twilight

The south end (looking north) of Kiholo Bay at Twilight.

The entire area north of where I took this image was once a gigantic freshwater/brackish fishpond. There are fresh water springs that dump into the ocean here so it creates a incredible lagoon with very clear freshwater on top and salt water under.

It was built by Kamehameha the Great in 1810 after his first pond was destroyed by the 1801 Hualalai lava flow. This new pond was mostly filled in 1859 after a lava flow from Mauna Loa breached the southern walls. This created the lagoon that's here now. It's about a 20 min hike from the highway down into the area.
