Full View Please. (I changed to to a smaller 8 bit jpg so it faster now - it's not as nice IMO but a 3MB submission makes it kinda hard to view).

This is one of my favorite locations on the Big Island. I was at home and it looked like it was going to be a good sunset so I needed someplace to drive quick to set up a shot. I've shot Kealakekua Bay before but it's so close to my house that I figured I'd see if I could get it with different light. In the summer the sun sets further north behind the north tip of the bay. Right after the sun went behind it the sky lit up like you see it in this image.

Kealakekua Bay is so BIG it is very hard to appreicate the grand scale with a photograph but I'm trying. I was going to hike from the top but there was just no time so I drove down to the south end where the roads basically ends into the ocean. The real fun here is not the "beach" which you'll notice is very lacking. This area has one of the largest and bets coral reefs in all of Hawaii. The north end can only be accessed by kayak, or tour boat so it's one of the best places to go scuba diving or snorkeling in the entire world. You'll see stuff here you won't see anywhere else. (and I live less than 5 minutes away - and yes I do know how lucky I am)

Lovely work my friend!

Possibly your best work.
This is beautifully composed, and the exposure from shadows to highlights is actually flawless.
PLEASE tell me this is one shot with filters and not HDR (if it's HDR then I take back that last comment :-))

It's a beautiful location, and a wonderful sky..you're lucky to live so close to such beauty. I hve to drive for over an hour to get near any coast, and it's not even close to this in photographic potential.

One thing I wonder is how it would be with the tripod a little closer to the ground. Those volcanic rocks are beautiful, and are really catching the light. I'd like to see a little more of them.

But great work, this is a lovely shot

Wow thanks for the high praise! This is one shot with filters and some photoshop work. I stacked a polarizer and 2 ND grads (thanks for the tip on the cokin Z holder and lee filters btw - you know the 100mm ones ). I think you can kinda see the hard grad line on the top ridge but it's minor. I was trying to get a faster shutter speed so I dialed it back to F8. I wanted a little movement in the water but wanted the clouds to be as sharp as I could. There was a large range of light here. I used the sky and the water to come up with the right exposure. I love the 11 af points on the D80. I was using MF but I like the fact I can use them to meter off of them.

For this shot I'm actually standing up on a rock wall/bulk head that leads down to the rocky "beach" area. I had one down lower by that bigger rock in the foreground but there were some tourists just to the right out of frame from this location and they were messing up the other shot. They did not speak English so I don't think they understood me when I asked them to move back for me.

Damn, that is one stunning scene. I'm loving the amount of detail in each part of the shot. =)

Pure brilliance!

Good use of leading lines, makes your eye curve along the coast up to the pattern the sun makes on the golden sky.

LOVE IT

Pure beauty, just like the other shot of yours! Really an amazing place and capture!
